It’s the same story every year: I’m happily going about my daily harvest – bringing in the beets, the potatoes, the tomatoes, the peppers – and enjoying the warm days and cool nights that September brings, when suddenly Environment Canada issues a Frost Warning.
I’m usually wrapping up my evening with a soothing cup of tea when it hits me that I haven’t taken the appropriate measures. So, just before midnight, I throw on a totally inadequate sweater and hightail it down to the tomato patch, grabbing whatever covering is at hand; this year, it was a 50′ roll of row cover fabric, a 13′ piece of shade cloth and two queen size sheets. This served to cover all six of my tomato/pepper beds. I also found a short piece of garden fleece to throw over my ‘late’ potatoes. It’s always quite a procedure, really, and can take almost an hour, depending on how tired I am.
I wasn’t alone last night, either. The coyotes were out. They were making their bewitching sounds just beyond the cedars, which freaked me out a little.
Anything (or anyone) that travels in a pack freaks me out a little.
